Information About Fiberglass Roof Shingles

The most modern synthetic asphalt roofing shingles are made from fiberglass. These types have overtaken older, organic asphalt shingles made from waste paper and wood fiber to become the most popular type of shingle material.
  1. Composition

    • Fiberglass shingles are made from non-organic fiberglass. Fiberglass shingles, as opposed to organic asphalt shingles, do not need to be pre-saturated with any stabilizing compounds, but are coated with them. Both types can be laminated.

    Dimensions

    • Fiberglass shingles are typically sold in 36-inch-by-12-inch pieces. These tabs can be fitted together to form the illusion of a single-piece roof.

    Fire and Other Damage

    • Fiberglass shingles are more resistant than their organic counterparts to fire, as well as extreme weather.

    Mold

    • Fiberglass shingles should be treated especially carefully with an anti-molding agent to prevent the growth and spread of mold after the roof has been installed.

    Cost and Longevity

    • Fiberglass shingles are the least expensive type of roofing material, but have the shortest lifespan before they need to be replaced. Fiberglass roofing typically needs to be replaced every 15 to 30 years.
