How to Operate a Box Blade Plow

Box blade plow manufacturers claim you can clear snow up to five times faster with a box plow than with an ordinary angle blade. Box blade plows are sometimes called snow pushers. Box plows consist of side braces, push plates and cutting edges which can be made of rubber or steel. The wear shoes are adjustable. Steel is good for hard-packed snow and ice, and the rubber can clean like a squeegee. These plows tend to be used on bucket-style tractors rather than smaller trucks.

Instructions

    • 1

Drive your vehicle into place. Attach the chains to the chain brackets at each end of the box blade plow. Connect the other ends to the hooks on the vehicle. Attach the ratchet binders and tighten until there is no sag.

    • 2

Perform a once-over check before starting to plow. The most important thing to check and the main difference between operating a box blade plow and operating a regular snow plow is that you have to check that the chains are parallel to the ground.

    • 3

Start plowing with the wear shoes riding flat with the ground surface. Do not tilt the box plow up or forward, as it causes uneven wear. You can also damage the receiver plate.

    • 4

Monitor the level indicator as you plow, to make sure you are keeping the box plow as level as possible.

    • 5

Toggle the tilt adjustment periodically to shake off any snow buildup. Snow can build in the corners of the box plow between the moldboard and the sides.
