How to Use a Push Snow Shovel

When you live in a region where snow accumulates during the winter months, you usually become well versed in the many different snow removal tools available for moving snow. While many people opt for snow blowers to clear the snow, others prefer to use manual power to clear snow from sidewalks and driveways. A push snow shovel is one shovel design that can enable you to move snow without lifting it, which can prevent stress to your back muscles.

Instructions

    • 1

Position the push shovel in front of you on the ground where you wish to begin clearing snow.

    • 2

Hold the shovel down onto the ground and begin walking and pushing the shovel. As you walk, maintain the pressure on the shovel so it pushes the snow along ahead of the shovel. Usually, most of the snow will push forward with the shovel and some snow on both sides will spill off as you walk.

    • 3

Walk back to your starting point and reposition the push shovel again to move another line of snow.

    • 4

Repeat Steps 2 and 3 to clear the snow along the entire area.

    • 5

Use a lifting shovel to clean up any areas of snow that you cannot finish with the push shovel. Often you must lift the snow around the bottoms of snow banks to the tops of the snow banks to keep it cleared from the driveways and sidewalk areas.
