How to Remove Ice From a Trex Deck

Removing ice from deck boards made from a composite of wood and plastic isn't a tough chore, but it should be handled somewhat differently than getting rid of ice from a regular treated lumber deck. Trex decking is designed to resist moisture, which can lead to splintering and rot. But the material also can be scratched by sharp tools, meaning care should be taken when clearing away winter ice and snow.

Things You'll Need

  • Calcium chloride
  • Rock salt
  • Plastic snow shovel

Instructions

    • 1

Distribute rock salt or calcium chloride over the icy spots. This will help melt ice patches. The area should be rinsed off once temperatures are warmer.

    • 2

Remove the ice with a plastic snow shovel after it begins to melt and detach itself from the composite wood surface. Metal shovels can scratch or chip the composite decking material.

    • 3

Shovel in the direction of the deck boards. Begin on an icy side of the deck, pushing the ice and snow to the end. Repeat this process, moving across the length of the deck until the ice is gone.
