How to Put Snow Chains on a Snowblower

Snowblower tire chains go around the tires of the snowblower and help the tires maintain friction with the ground. Most large snowblowers are self-propelled. Without chains, the snowblower will have a much harder time working its way through large snowfalls or working in icy conditions. There are two types of tire chains: two- and four-link. Generally, the two-link is the best choice. It fits more tightly around the tire and will provide better traction. You only need to place tire chains on the snowblower's two drive tires.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the tire chain flat on the ground behind the wheel you will be wrapping it around. Make sure the chain is not twisted anywhere.

    • 2

Pull the snowblower backward so that the wheel you are wrapping is in the center of the chain. Lift the front of the chain up and around the tire. Keep the chains spread as evenly over the tire as possible.

    • 3

Fasten the "C" hook on the side of the tire facing inward first. On the side of the tire facing outward, put the chain over the fold-over lever lock, pull it down and hook it onto the chain.

    • 4

Repeat Steps 1 to 3 on the other drive tire.

    • 5

Remove a cross chain with a hammer and chisel if the chains are loose. Place the chisel under the hooks that hold the cross chain in place. Hammer the chisel to spread the hooks.

    • 6

Hook a spring tensioner onto the tire chain to help maintain the life of the tire. The spring tensioner has five hooks you place evenly around the outside edge of the tire chain. Tighten the tensioner as needed by adjusting the chains on it.
