How to Melt Ice With a Garden Sprayer

In northern climates, snow and ice are a fact of life every winter. While you can easily shovel snow from your walk, removing a coating of ice is another matter. Salt is the traditional substance used in many communities, but carrying buckets or bags of salt while spreading it over your walk is a tiring and difficult process. Instead, make use of a tool you would otherwise have packed away until summer--use your garden sprayer to melt the ice with much less effort.

Instructions

    • 1

Empty your garden sprayer and rinse it thoroughly.

    • 2

Fill the tank of your garden sprayer with ice-melting liquid. Fill the tank completely for a large job or just partially to melt ice in a small area.

    • 3

Spray the icy area by squeezing the lever at the top of the handle. Make short passes of the wand and cover the entire iced surface.

    • 4

Check the state of the ice after five minutes. Most of the ice should be melted at this point, unless you have heavy icing.

    • 5

Apply another light coat of the liquid ice melter to prevent water from refreezing on your walk.
