How to Troubleshoot Toro Power Shift

Certain Toro brand snowblowers are equipped with power shift technology. This shifting allows users to maneuver the snowblower either forward or backwards with the shift on the handle. The Toro snowblowers that offer this are the higher end multi-speed gas powered units. In addition to the forward and rear shifting, there are high and low gears for forward movement powered by the power shift. If your power shift is not functioning, try some troubleshooting tips to get it up and blowing snow once again.

Start the Toro snowblower and try shifting the power shift handle into the first forward gear. If the shifter will not move and the snowblower was left out in below freezing temperatures, the shifter may be stuck and frozen. Bring the snowblower into a heated garage and allow it to thaw. Bring it back outside, start it again and try engaging the shifter.

Remove the nuts from the gear box using the adjustable wrench. Inspect the gear box interior. Look at the bushing/gears and check that they are lubricated and nothing is caught in the teeth. Spray the bushings with the lubricant. Let the lubricant soak in. Replace the top of the box, and tighten the nuts. Start the Toro and engage the shifter.

Look under the shifter to ensure the external linkages. The cables connecting the shifter to the gears are attached and without frays. Clean out the linkages of any debris and spray the lubricant into the housings. Start the Toro and engage the shifter.
