How to Install Snowblower Belts

Broken or worn snowblower belts are a common cause of equipment failure. To add insult to injury, these problems usually don't announce themselves until you really need a snowblower. Changes in weather extremes from winter and summer can cause the part to expand and contract, eventually causing the belt that drives the snowblower augers to slip or break. Belts should be checked annually, and replaced as needed, using only belts approved by manufacturers for specific snowblowers.

Instructions

    • 1

Find your owner's manual. It should provide important information about the specific location of your drive belt, as well as the part number for a replacement.

    • 2

Use a screwdriver, pliers or ratchet to remove the belt cover. Place the screws or nuts in a bowl or cup where they won't be lost.

    • 3

Determine how your snowblower idles. Most models use a clutch handle to engage and disengage the augers. Make sure the clutch is in the idle position so the belt can be removed from pulleys.

    • 4

Remove the old belt. Slip the new part over the pulleys. Engage the clutch to make sure the new belt fits tightly over the pulleys.

    • 5

Start your snowblower. Engage the clutch and make sure the belt is properly aligned over the pulleys. Turn the snowblower off. Replace the belt cover. Fasten the screws, nuts or bolts tightly.
