How to Replace a Shear Pin Honda Snowblower

The shear pins on a Honda snowblower are designed to break when the auger or blower become blocked with a foreign object. This avoids damaging to the more expensive auger and blower, but leaves the operator with the task of replacing the bolts. These pins should not be replaced with ordinary hardware bolts. Rather, seek out a proper shear pin at a hardware store or a Honda snowblower dealer. On a Honda snowblower, there are three shear pins, or shear bolts. One pin is dedicated to the blower, while two pins are for the auger.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the machine on a flat surface. Turn the engine off, and detach the spark-plug wire to ensure the machine doesn't accidentally start while it is being serviced. Clean any snow, ice or other objects from the auger and blower.

    • 2

Check the blower shear bolt, located on the spindle behind the auger, near where the snow is moved by the auger into the blower. Remove the old pin by attaching locking pliers to the bolt and a 6-mm socket wrench to the locking nut. Replace the pin with a new bolt and a 6-mm self-locking nut.

    • 3

Identify the auger shear pins. There are two located on either side of the middle auger spindle and the blower spindle. Remove the left side pin by attaching locking pliers to the bolt and loosening the 6-mm nut with a socket wrench. Replace the nut with a new shear pin and nut. Repeat this process on the right-side shear pin.

Securely tighten each of the pins and nuts. Reattach the spark-plug wire.
