How to Replace the Cutting Edge on a Craftsman Snowblower

The cutting edge on a Craftsman snowblower is designed to scrape up snow and ice so they can be dispatched through the auger and the blower. Over time, the cutting edge, known as a shave plate, can become worn down. If the cutting edge needs to be replaced, the old one can be removed and a new one installed within about 30 minutes. Wear heavy gloves during this procedure to protect against being cut by the blade or auger assembly.

Instructions

    • 1

Park the Craftsman snowblower on a flat surface. Detach the spark plug wire to ensure that the machine doesn't start while you are servicing the cutting blade.

Put on heavy work gloves. Locate the skid shoes on the outside of both sides of the snow collection area of the snowblower. Remove the four carriage bolts and hex nuts that attach the skid shoes to the outer sides of the snowblower.

Find the cutting edge, or shave plate, which is located on the bottom side of the snow auger. Remove the carriage bolts and hex nuts that attach the shave plate to the snowblower.

    • 4

Install the new shave plate. Make sure the heads of the carriage bolts are on the inside of the housing. Reattach the skids shoes on both sides of the snowblower.

    • 5

Tighten each of the nuts and bolts securely. Reattach the spark plug wire.
