My Murray Snow Thrower Won't Drive

On most snowblowers, including those manufactured by Murray, the machine moves via a drive belt that is powered by the engine and looped through a series of pulleys. In most cases, if the snowblower will not move forward it is because the traction drive belt is broken. Before the snowy season begins, always check the traction drive belt for wear or damage. Changing the belt can be completed within 30 minutes with just a few tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Run the machine until it is out of fuel or drain the fuel tank. Park the machine on a level spot and detach the spark plug wire.

    • 2

Remove the belt cover. Identify the e-ring bolt on the right side of the machine. This holds the swing plate axle rod in place. Loosen and remove the bolt and pull the rod out of its slot. Pivot the swing plate, which is shaped slightly like an oversized, backwards letter "J" forward.

    • 3

Pull the old traction drive belt away from the pulleys. Replace the old belt with a new one in the same order around the pulleys.

    • 4

Push the swing plate axle back in position and secure it with the swing plate axle rod. Place the e-ring back in position to lock the rod in place.

    • 5

Reattach the sparkplug wire. Refuel the machine.
