How to Replace the Drive on a Craftsman Snow Thrower

Like most snow blowers, the Craftsman brand operates by using a system of pulleys and belts. One belt controls the auger, which picks up and distributes the snow, while the other belt controls the forward motion of the machine. Over time, these belts can become brittle and worn and break. When they do snap, replacing them is a job that takes little time and just a few basic tools. New drive belts are available at Sears stores and at most hardware stores that sell snow-removal equipment.

Instructions

    • 1

Position the snow blower on a flat surface. Detach the sparkplug wire to ensure against accidental start-up. Remove the belt cover by unscrewing the self-tapping screw on the top of the cover and releasing the plastic tabs holding it in place.

    • 2

Tilt the machine forward, resting it on the auger housing. Unhitch the spring that connects the transmission to the bolt on the engine frame. This is located on the left side of the snow blower, near the wheel.

    • 3

Push the transmission forward in order to relieve pressure on the drive belt. With the belt loosened, remove it from the transmission pulley. Continue removing the old belt from the pulleys. Discard the old belt.

    • 4

Place the new drive belt in the groove of the engine pulley, which is the smaller pulley located on the front side of the pulley assembly. Tilt the transmission forward again in order to place the drive belt on the drive pulley.

    • 5

Secure the transmission in place by reattaching the spring to the bolt on the engine frame. Place the belt cover back in place and tighten the self-tapping screw that holds it in position. Reattach the spark plug wire.
