Remove the securing screws, bolts or plastic parts to disconnect the shovel and shaft. Use a screwdriver or pliers to take out the bolts. Place the bolts or screws in a plastic bag or tool box. Keep them in a safe place: you will use these bolts again. Keep the shovel part in a safe place during the repair process. Recycle or hold onto the broken handle.
Visit a hardware or garden store for a new handle. Find a shaft with the same, or similar, length and width. Make sure it feels comfortable to grip and lift.
Attach the shovel and the replacement handle. Use the bolts leftover from the removal process to install the new handle.
Clean the new wooden handle. Use a stiff-bristled brush to smooth away any splinters left over from factory production. Sand the handle with a sheet of medium grit sandpaper.
Shape the replacement handle, so that the shovel fits securely to new handle, by filing or sanding both ends of the wood handle.
