Preventing Ice Build Up on a Roof

The freezing, melting and refreezing of snow on your roof leads to ice build-up. Eventually this ice build-up may cause an ice jam in your gutters, which leads to all sorts of problems as the water backs up into the roof and leaks into your home. Preventing ice build-up in the first place protects you from the cost and consequences of an ice jam. While there are more permanent fixes for preventing ice build-up, there are also cheaper measures you can take to prevent ice build-up on your roof.

Instructions

    • 1

Increase the insulation in your attic space and seal any spaces where air can flow from the house into the attic space. Hire a qualified contractor to assist you with properly installing insulation and sealing spaces.

    • 2

Remove snow from the roof with a roof rake, push broom or snow shovel. Use a ladder to access all sides of your house and look for areas of snow accumulation.

    • 3

Fill one leg from an old pair of pantyhose with calcium chloride snow melt to deal with any ice. Place the pantyhose across the ice and allow it to sit until the ice melts, typically 12 to 24 hours. Remove the pantyhose after the ice melts. Use the pantyhose anytime you see ice forming.
