My MTD Model 6FE Wheels Will Not Turn

The MTD 6FE snow blower moves through the snow by virtue of a drive belt that connects the engine to the wheels through a series of pulleys. When this belt becomes worn or cracked, it can break, which cuts off power to the wheels. Replacing the drive belt is a relatively easy task that you can accomplish with few tools. You can purchase new drive belts at most hardware stores and retailers that sell MTD products.

Instructions

    • 1

Position the snow blower on a level surface. Disconnect the spark-plug wire to make sure the machine won't start while you are working on it.

    • 2

Remove the plastic belt cover on the front side of the engine by unscrewing the two screws holding it in position. Tilt the machine forward so it rests on the front housing.

    • 3

Remove the screws on the frame cover to expose the drive belt. These screws are located on the underside of the machine.

    • 4

Identify the idler pulley, located in the middle left side of the assembly. Pull it upward to lessen tension on the drive belt. Remove the belt from the engine pulley located on the right upper side of the pulley-drive assembly. Slip the belt off the friction wheel disc and discard it.

Loop the new belt through the pulleys in the reverse order in which you removed the old one. Place the frame cover back in place and tighten the screws that hold it in place. Reattach the belt cover on the front of the machine. Tilt the machine back to its normal starting position and reattach the spark-plug wire.
