How to Remove Snow from Roof Exhaust Vents

A snow or roof rake can be used to remove the snow from the roof exhaust vents of your home. Snow allowed to accumulate and cover the vents of your home can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. People die each year from snow covered furnace exhaust vents, because the deadly gases have nowhere to go and so they back draft into the house. Keep the exhaust vents free of snow this winter and you won't have to worry.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on a pair of snow pants, a ski mask, a snow jacket, snow gloves, snow boots and a snow hood. It's important to keep warm during the snow removal process.

    • 2

Go out into the snow storm and assemble the snow or roof rake.

    • 3

Lift the rake up onto the roof from the ground level.

    • 4

Pull snow off the roof's edges until only two inches are left on the shingles. Continue pulling snow off the roof, a foot up the roof at a time until you reach the exhaust vents.

    • 5

Lift the rake and pull all snow off and around the vents. Continue pulling the snow down that is above the height of the vents until all snow within four to five feet has been cleared. Repeat this process as often as needed throughout the snow storm, to ensure the vents are uncovered.
