How to Change Belts in My Sears Snow Thrower

Sears' snow throwers use a track drive belt and an auger belt. Both stretch and may ultimately wear out and break. You can adjust both belts for wear and stretching, but sometimes you will have to replace them. If the snow thrower won't move forward, the track belt needs adjusting or replacing. You can tell that the auger belt needs adjusting or replacing when the control cable is adjusted properly and the snow doesn't discharge. Replace the belts instead of adjusting them when there's visible damage.

Instructions

  1. Track Drive Belt

    • 1

Disconnect the spark plug wire and remove the belt cover.

    • 2

Pull the track drive idler pulley back and slip the belt past the idler pulley. Remove the belt from the engine pulley. You may have to loosen and move the auger drive engine pulley first. Then move the shift rod lever all the way to the right and remove the belt.

    • 3

Add a new belt. Reposition the auger pulley if you moved it and tighten the set screw. Make sure the pulley on the engine lines up with the large tower pulley and that the key on the engine is flush with the end of the shaft. Replace the cover and spark plug wire.

    Auger Drive Belt

    • 4

Disconnect the spark plug wire and remove the belt cover.

    • 5

Pull the right hand belt guide away from the drive pulley. Loosen the auger idler pulley and pull it away from the belt. Set the auger drive clutch lever and slip the belt out. Then remove the two auger housing bolts and move the weight transfer system to the "Transport" released position. Loosen the two bottom belts if you have to --- you want the auger housing and motor frame to come apart.

    • 6

Remove the old belt and add the new belt by placing it on the large lower pulley first. Engage the auger clutch and the weight transfer system to pivot the auger housing and motor. Release the clutch lever and re-fit any bolts removed or loosened. Slide the belt onto the auger drive engine pulley.
