Natural Way to Clear Ice From the Driveway

When you live where snow and ice accumulates during the winter months, you may have shoveling and de-icing tasks to clear your driveway and sidewalks. Although rock salt is the standard de-icer, some people prefer not to use it because of the harmful environmental impacts it can have on groundwater, wildlife and plants. If you select a more natural way to clear ice from the driveway, you can reduce your negative impact on the environment.

Instructions

    • 1

Sprinkle 1/4 cup alfalfa meal over every square yard of driveway surface. Use a cup or fill a broadcast spreader to sprinkle the alfalfa meal evenly.

    • 2

Allow the alfalfa time to work to melt the ice. Reapply the alfalfa meal several times during snow and ice accumulation to enable it to continue to melt ice.

    • 3

Use an ice removal shovel to remove snow promptly and pick at the accumulated ice on the driveway. Often the snow you do not remove in a timely fashion becomes ice after just 24 to 48 hours. When you remove snow thoroughly soon after it accumulates, it will not become a layer of ice.

    • 4

Sweep snow away from the driveway after it blows back over the surface. By keeping the driveway clear of snow, ice may not develop.
