How to Melt Ice on Paved Walkways

Icy walkways and driveways can make winter a dangerous time of year. Slipping and falling is a common occurrence around the home and could lead to sprained and broken bones. Protect yourself and your loved ones by melting the ice in an eco-friendly way without the harmful effects regular rock salt has on your pavement.

Instructions

    • 1

Shovel as much snow and ice as you can off of the walkway. This will make it easier to find the ice and begin melting it.

    • 2

Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda wherever the icy patches are. The baking soda will melt the ice but not cause any damage to the pavement like salt can.

    • 3

Sprinkle the area with sand after the melting process has begun. This will create traction and prevent any slipping or falling on the ice.
