DIY Snow Plowing

For home and business owners, a snowy holiday season means more than rosy cheeks and snowball fights. Snow clearing is a service many people and businesses pay for each year, but it is possible to plow away snow in your driveway or small parking lot yourself. Plowing the snow is much faster and easier than shoveling it by hand; you can also plow snow for your neighbors for a fee.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Mount the snow plow onto your truck following the plow manufacturer's instructions. Plows are available online or at hardware stores; sometimes discount retailers will also offer plows. Straight-blade plows are optimal for small plowing jobs.

    • 2

Angle the blade to the left or right of the vehicle and make your first pass near the edge of the parking lot or driveway after 1 inch or more of snow has fallen.

    • 3

Plow across a parking lot with multiple passes, always throwing snow in front of you and to the same side. You can choose to back up with the blade raised and plow forward for each new pass, or turn around and switch the angle of the blade. Each time you will push new snow and previously thrown snow further away from the starting edge until you reach the opposite edge of the lot. For a small driveway, you can plow once, throwing snow to the right, back up and plow again, throwing it to the left to get the same effect.

    • 4

Position the blade straight in front of you and raise it above the ground. Drive up to any snow remaining in front of a building and lower the blade so that the snow is between the blade and the truck. Drive in reverse to drag the snow away from the building for a few truck lengths.

    • 5

Turn the truck around and push the snow forward to the edge of the cleared area.

    • 6

Drive over the space one more time with the plow lowered and facing straight forward to clear any residual snow. If needed, shovel excess snow away from sidewalks.
