How to Melt Ice on the Driveway With Salt

Winter weather in mild and cold climates can lead to snow and ice on driveways, sidewalks and other surfaces around homes and businesses. Ice accumulation on a driveway can create hazards for drivers as well as walkers. If a public sidewalk passes through the driveway, homeowners may be required to keep that area free of snow and ice. Various salts, when applied efficiently, can melt driveway ice quickly.

Instructions

    • 1

Shovel as much snow off of the icy driveway as possible.

    • 2

Chip away especially thick ice using an ice chipper, and shovel any ice that can be easily loosened.

    • 3

Evenly sprinkle a thin layer of deicing salt across the driveway surface. An old cup, scoop with a handle or an empty plastic milk gallon with the top cut off is suitable for this.

    • 4

Check the driveway after several hours and apply more salt as needed or shovel slush off of the driveway.

    • 5

Pre-treat the driveway before any snow events. Sprinkling a thin layer of salt before snowfalls keeps moisture from bonding to the driveway surface and forming an ice layer.
