How to Keep Your Driveway Clear

Depending on your geographic location, keeping your driveway clear during the winter can be quite a chore. Between accumulation from snowstorms and the piles of snow kicked into your driveway by plow trucks, keeping up with snow removal on your driveway during a blizzard can be a struggle, even if you are in peak physical condition. To keep your driveway clear and enable your car to leave the drive with relative ease, adopt a few snow-fighting tactics.

Instructions

    • 1

Clear the snow in your driveway using either a snow shovel or snow blower. Repeat as the snow piles up during a heavy storm as frequently as every few hours during storms with rapid accumulation. Avoid piling the snow into the road, as plows will just knock it back in your driveway (or your neighbor's drive) as they pass.

Throw down a layer of rock salt or commercially prepared ice melt pellets. This will prevent melting snow from turning into ice overnight, and break up any ice that has already formed on the surface of your driveway.

    • 3

Clear a section on the side of the road of snow. Stand at the end of your driveway facing away from the house, look left, and clear away the snow for several feet parallel to the road. This will help to reduce the amount of snow kicked up by city plows from building up in a large pile at the end of your drive.

Invest in a heated driveway. These heating systems help to melt snow and keep your driveway clear. They must be installed before late fall, and while the cost can be quite high upfront depending on the length and width of your driveway, it can cost as little as 60 cents per hour to run the heating system once it is installed.
