How to Get Rid of Driveway Slush Before It Freezes

Slush forms on driveways when the whether starts to warm. Snow and ice melt enough to form slush, which makes it easier to keep a driveway clear. However, when the slush freezes it turns into slick ice which is dangerous to walk or drive on. Get rid of slush whenever you see it to prevent this from happening. You will also find slush on driveways if you treat ice with rock salt. This melts this ice into slush.

Select a snow shovel for the job. All shovels used for slush will need to have a bucket shape so you can scoop the slush when needed. Use a plastic shovel on asphalt driveways and those laid with pavers or brick. Metal shovels work for all others.

    • 2

Start shoveling at the top center of the driveway, using the shovel to push the slush to the bottom. Scoop the slush to the side or push it onto the road if it won't interfere with traffic.

    • 3

Move on to the sides of the driveway. Each row of shoveled slush should overlap the previous so that all the slush gets scooped up.
