How to Make the Snow on Your Roof Melt Faster

A heavy snow load can damage a roof due to its sheer weight, or from the effects of freezing and thawing, which can damage shingles. For these reasons, it is important to remove snow from your roof. Ice dams are formed when a solid ridge of ice develops on the eave of a roof and prevents the melting snow from running off of the roof. This results in the buildup of water and snow.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the areas of your roof that seem to be clogged by ice dams. The places on the eave where solid ice has formed are the areas that you want to address.

    • 2

Place the ladder in front of the first ice dam area to be treated. Make sure that you do not place the ladder directly under the overhang of the roof. Place the ladder away from the roof as far as possible to prevent falling ice from hitting you.

    • 3

Stand on the ladder and rake the edge of your roof where the ice dams are present with the roof rake, taking extreme caution. If large icicles are present, you may want to consider consulting a professional rather than continuing to remove the ice dam yourself. The goal is to remove as much snow and ice from these locations as possible, but be patient and work slowly. Do not try to force too much of the ice off at once.

Reduce the possibility of ice dams reforming by tossing roof melt tablets onto your roof. These tablets will help the snow to melt and form efficient pathways for the water to run off of your roof.
