How to Remove a Roof Ice Dam With a Sock

A sock can keep magnesium chloride -- one of the least corrosive deicers -- contained so a chunk of it will sit directly on a roof ice dam. Placing the deicer in the sock makes for easy removal once the dam melts and it provides a buffer so the deicer doesn't come in direct contact with the roof. Choose a large sock, if possible, so it can cover the entire ice dam. Thinner socks work better since they keep the magnesium chloride in closer contact with the ice.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a ladder next to the roof where the ice dam is located. Climb onto the ladder.

    • 2

Gently remove any snow on top of the ice with a broom or shovel.

    • 3

Fill the sock with magnesium chloride and tie the sock closed.

    • 4

Lay the sock across the ice dam, with the end of the sock hanging over the gutter.

    • 5

Wait for about 12 to 24 hours for the ice to melt before removing the sock from the roof.
