How to Eliminate an Ice Dam on a Roof Using Rock Salt

Ice dams occur when snow and ice melt on a roof and form a thick layer of ice along the roof's edge along its gutters and drains. They pose numerous problems to homeowners, including the possibility of roof collapse, roof leaks and other home issues, such as the formation of mold in attic spaces. While it is often recommended that you hire a professional to remove ice dams, it is possible to take care of the problem yourself through careful rock salt application.

Instructions

Use a ladder to gain the reach you need to apply rock salt to the ice dams. Have a friend or family member hold the ladder or spot you while you work to avoid injuries.

    • 2

Pour the salt directly from the bag onto your ice dam or use a plastic cup or similar item to scoop the salt out of the bag to better control application. Wear thick gloves while applying the salt to avoid skin irritation. Apply the salt in the morning, around either 9 a.m. or 10 a.m., so it can work all day. The heat of the sun will help melt the ice as well if it is a sunny day.

Check the salt's progress about six hours after application. The salt should have melted the majority of the ice, where applied. Repeat the salt application process each day until the ice dam is eliminated.
