How to Restring a Toro Snowblower

Toro snowblowers are used to removing large quantities of snow from walks and driveways. Many Toro models use a pull starter, which is a plastic handle attached to a cord or string that you tug repeatedly to get the snowblower's engine running. Sometimes the string can snap. If it does, you probably will want to replace the pull starter even if the snowblower also has an electric starter. You can restring a Toro snowblower in a series of straightforward steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the starter housing, which is located on the back of the snowblower on most Toro models.

    • 2

Remove the damaged string by locating the end attached to the starter, then pulling the string backward through both the external hole that normally leads to the handle and the internal hole where the string attaches to the starter.

    • 3

Insert the new string through the internal hole and tie a knot at one end to keep it from slipping all the way through. Wind the spring-loaded spool backwards until the spring is tense, turning it to your left and finishing when the internal and external holes line up. Thread the other end of the string through the external hole. By gently releasing the spool, you should be able to let it rewind the entire rope. Just be careful not to let the handle end disappear through the external hole.

    • 4

Reattach the starter housing to the snowblower, again making sure not to let the string slip all the way back into the housing.

    • 5

Insert the end of the cord into the hole in the handle, and tie off this end.
