Remove as much snow from the surface of the brick pavers as possible by shoveling. Alternatively, use a snow blower with rubber-coated steel guide pads to remove the snow without damaging the pavers.
Brush powdery snow off the pavers with a stiff-bristled broom. Push a utility broom in a forward motion from one end of the area to the other to get as close to the surface as possible.
Pour 1 lb. magnesium chloride into a bucket. Add 1 lb. play sand. Mix the two ingredients together with a wooden spoon. This amount of material will cover an area approximately 3 or 4 square yards.
Broadcast the mixture over the pavers if ice remains after shoveling and sweeping. Use a plastic 1 cup scoop to sprinkle the mixture. Add more, if needed, for thick ice buildup.
Allow the ice to melt. If the sun dries the pavers or temperatures rise, sweep the pavers off with the broom to remove the sand mixture and clean the surface.
