How to Clear the Roof of Snow During Blizzard

The last thing you'll want to do during a blizzard is clear snow from the roof, but it's important to keep it from building up. The shallower the snow is, the easier it will be to remove from the roof. Stay safe when shoveling snow during a blizzard by dressing in protective gear such as boots, a face mask and a waterproof jacket. When removing snow from the roof, use a snow rake made of a light plastic or aluminum material that you can attach to an extension pole.

Instructions

    • 1

Adjust the snow rake handle to a length that is manageable in extreme weather because it might be difficult to maneuver the tool during high winds.

    • 2

Set the rake on top of the roof edge and push it up until you don't have any more handle to work with. Stay at least 4 feet from the roof edge so snow does not fall on top of you.

    • 3

Grasp the snow rake handle with both hands and pull it down the roof. Avoid bouncing or banging the rake on the roof, which could damage the shingles.

    • 4

Stop pulling the rake when it reaches the edge of the roof. Continue raking the rest of the roof in the same manner until it is clear of snow.
