How to Connect Two Metal Roof Panels

A metal roof can last for 30 to 50 years when installed properly. Overlapping panels form a water-resistant surface to protect the underlying structure. A moisture barrier installed between the ribs where two panels connect ensures that windblown moisture doesn't get in. Special roofing screws, with rubber gaskets, hold the panels together and fasten them tight to the roof rafters. The rubber gasket helps keeps water from seeping through the holes created by the screw threads.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay two metal panels down on the roof, side-by-side. Position them perpendicularly to the roof ridge and eaves.

    • 2

Stick a piece of sealer tape along the length of the second rib in from the edge of one of the panels.

    • 3

Overlap the ribs along the edges of each panel. The overlap is correct when two valleys in between the two ribs closest to the edge of the panels connect.

    • 4

Place self-tapping metal stitch screws every 12 inches through the overlapping high ribs. Drive the screws in with an electric screw gun. Use a hexagon-head screw drill socket.
