DIY Drip Edges Installation

Installing proper flashing is an essential part of roof replacement. Drip edge flashing fits around the edges of your roof. It is made from galvanized steel formed in an L shape, with each face about 1-inch wide. The flashing fits on the edge of the roof, with one face on top of the decking. This face is flat. The other face fits on the edge of the decking, with an angled lip at the bottom designed to shed water.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the edges of the roof along both gables and the bottom edge. Add the measurements up and purchase enough drip edge flashing, plus 10 percent more, to cover the measurements.

    • 2

Fit the drip edge onto the roof, starting at one corner of the bottom edge. Position the flashing with the flat face on top of the decking and the edge with the angled lip pressed firmly against the edge of the roof decking. Drive one 1-inch galvanized roof nail through the top face of the flashing into the decking every 10 inches.

    • 3

Overlap the second piece at the end of the first by two inches. Press it against the edge of the roof as before. Drive nails in every 10 inches along the length of the piece. Continue fitting full pieces in place until you reach the first corner.

    • 4

Position the flashing so that it overlaps the last piece and runs past the end of the roof. Mark the spot where the corner of the roof intersects with the flashing. Cut the top face of the flashing on the mark from the edge up to the fold of the flashing.

Nail the flashing in place up to the corner and fold the flashing against the corner, so that the front edge bends with the cut in the flashing folding back over itself; that corner now has two thicknesses of flashing on top. Nail through both layers into the decking. Continue adding pieces, cutting to fold around corners until you come full circle to where you started.

Cut the last piece to fit so that it overlaps the first piece by several inches and nail it in place.
