How Can I Kill Moss on a Tile Roof?

Moss can grow on a tile roof of any type. Moss needs a good deal of moisture and shade to grow -- two common factors on roofs in areas that get a good deal of rainfall and have high levels of humidity. You will likely find moss more often on the north-facing side of the roof. If not removed, moss can shorten the lifespan of your roof tile, causing rot and erosion. However, removing moss from your roof can be done with just a small amount of effort.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Find and buy a product that kills moss. Look for the least toxic product to protect other plants growing around your house. Commercial products are effective as well as oxygen bleach, which must be combined with water. Do not use chlorine bleach as it can change the color of your roof.

Apply the product or bleach using a brush attached to a pole in the spring or the fall. Scrub down the roof with the brush, wiping away the moss' root system. Do not brush upwards, as you may damage your tiles.

Use a pressure sprayer to remove the rest of the dead moss from the roof once the product has killed it. Stand on the top of the roof and point the sprayer downward to prevent water from getting up into the tile and accumulating. Make sure you are safe and secure on the roof before using the sprayer.

Nail down zinc strips in intervals across the roof to stop moss from growing back.
