How to Cover a Roof Leak With a Tarp

The purpose of a roof is to seal the upper exterior of a building so that rainwater does not damage the interior of the home. Small amounts of water can cause large problems with mold, mildew, rotting and structural damage. Severe storms can quickly damage a roof, removing shingles with high winds and damaging tree branches. When you notice a roof leak or missing shingles, cover the damaged areas immediately with a tarp to prevent further exterior and interior damage.

Instructions

    • 1

Roll two 1-inch by 3-inch pieces of lumber on two opposite ends of the tarp and secure the 1-inch by 3-inch lumber to the tarp with a screw. Insert the screw just deep enough to hold the tarp to the wood. The 1-inch by 3-inch lumber acts as an anchor to hold the tarp in place and allows you to screw the tarp to the roof.

    • 2

Climb the ladder to access the roof. Inspect the damaged roof to determine the best location for the tarp. Do not step on any visibly damaged areas of the roof.

    • 3

Drape the tarp over the peak of the roof with the weighted ends on each side of the peak. Position the rolled end of the tarp down so the top of the tarp is smooth. When installed upside down, the 1-inch by 3-inch lumber creates a barrier that will hold water and trap debris.

    • 4

Screw the 1-inch by 3-inch lumber to the roof.

    • 5

Slide additional 1-inch by 3-inch boards under the sides of the tarp and insert screws through the tarp and wood into the roof. Use enough screws and wood to fully secure the tarp in place.
