DIY Roof Washing

Washing your roof can remove leaves, pine needles, and buildup from moss or lichens. The easiest way to wash your roof is with a pressure washer. Using a pressure washer is quick, and doesn't require the use of any harsh chemical cleaners. When washing your roof, always wear non-slip shoes. Selecting the appropriate pressure washer nozzle tip will prevent damage to your roof shingles during the washing process.

Instructions

    • 1

Fit your pressure washer with a 25-degree general duty nozzle top. This nozzle produces a light spray that won't damage your shingles or force water between them.

    • 2

Stand at the highest point of your roof, at one end of the house. Press the trigger on the pressure washer wand to activate the spray. Aim the spray at one shingle, keeping the nozzle at least 12 inches from the roof. Spray until the shingle is clean.

    • 3

Turn off the pressure washer spray by releasing the trigger. Inspect the test shingle to make sure the pressure washer has not produced any damage.

    • 4

Continue spraying the roof, always keeping the nozzle at least 12 inches from the surface. Aim the spray nozzle down the roof so water doesn't work its way under any shingles. Wash the roof from the highest point, downwards to the eaves.
