Perform an energy audit to determine the amount of energy needed to generate power from your roof. (See Resources) This can give you an idea of how many panels you need to install and how much money you'll save by doing so.
Determine the type of mounts you need to install the solar panels on your roof. There are different kinds of mounts depending on the where and how you install the panels. Talk to your supplier about the correct mounting brackets needed.
Locate the rafters on your roof using a stud finder. Rafters support the solar panels once installed.
Measure the areas where you want to install the solar panels. Mark out the correct spacing as indicated by the type of solar panels you are using. Be sure the mounts are aligned properly by using a laser sight or twine.
Pre-drill holes for the mounts. Use a pilot bit to prevent damage to the rafters while drilling.
Secure the mounts to your roof with lag bolts.
Use 3/8-inch bolts to attach metal rails to the mounts.
Attach the solar panels to the metal rails and secure them in place.
Connect a conduit from the panels to a converter in your garage. Make sure its secure in place and can not be removed by severe weather.
