How to Waterproof a Pop-Up Camper

The repetition of setting up a pop-up camper and taking it down can take a toll on the seams of the frame and the roof. Pop-up camper material can be made watertight easily using a caulking gun, sealant and self-adhesive repair tape. Reinforce the roof with a self-adhesive roof covering to further protect the camper from harsh weather and UV rays. A little maintenance goes a long way to providing a watertight seal for your pop-up camper.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the roof of the camper with dish soap and water. Allow the roof to dry completely.

    • 2

Inspect the camper for loose or crumbling sealant. Remove flaking sealant using a bristle brush. Do not force off any sealant.

    • 3

Apply a generous, new bead of sealant along the edges of the roof membrane all the way around the roof using a caulking gun. Apply the sealant around vents, plumbing vent pipe holes, air conditioner openings, around all screw heads and under all trim strips. Spread the sealant using a small paint brush. Allow the sealant to dry for the time recommended by the manufacturer.

Apply self-adhesive repair tape to every seam on the roof and on the sides of the camper. Roll the roof repair tape out to the length of the seam to be covered. Ensure that the tape is where you want it before applying. It will not move once applied. Allow 8 inches to 10 inches to overlap the ends. Cut the end with the utility knife. Press the tape down onto the seam. Remove the backing slowly while simultaneously pressing down on the tape. Rub the tape firmly to activate the bonding material.

Use the same method as in Step 5 to apply self-adhesive repair tape to every seam and crack on the inside of the camper.

    • 6

Roll out the self-adhesive roofing material on the roof of the camper. Align the edge of the sheet with the edge of the roof. Roll the end of the material back and remove two feet of the release film. Press the sheet down to the roof to adhere. Slowly unroll the self-adhesive sheet while simultaneously removing the release film. Press the material firmly in place with your hand. Work your way down the sheet, smoothing and pressing the material down to the roof. Trim the material around all vents and protrusions using scissors.
