How to Patch Aluminum Roofing

Aluminum roofs can become damaged due to extreme weather events or some accidental event, such as a tree falling. Water and wind can enter the structure below through a damaged roof, causing damage to the interior and putting a premium on quick repair. Aluminum roofs are simpler to repair than tar and shingle or tile roofs, making the patching process much less tedious and labor intensive.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on gloves to protect your hands. Aluminum that is torn has sharp, jagged edges and can cut you easily.

    • 2

Square out the hole with aluminum snips to have even edges to work with.

    • 3

Hold a piece of aluminum over the squared hole to size it up. Cut the aluminum patch to overlap the squared hole by 2 to 3 inches.

    • 4

Lay the aluminum patch over the squared hole and hold it in place with weather-resistant butyl tape.

    • 5

Secure the aluminum patch to the roof using aluminum screws and a screw gun.

    • 6

Spread a bead of caulk with a caulk gun around the edges of the patch, letting the caulk dry for about a half-hour.

    • 7

Cover the patch with liquid roof coating, using a paint roller to seal the patch to the roof.
