How to Winterize Roof Drains

Roof drains are exposed to the effects of the weather and during the winter months, they can get worse if they are already obstructed. Clogged roof drains keep water on the roof, which increases the chances of a leaky roof. Because water expands when it freezes, ice can damage roof drains, especially when the drains are blocked with debris. Before winter arrives, take the time to care for your roof and prepare the drains for the freeze of winter.

Instructions

    • 1

Clear all debris from the gutters of the roof drains. Cut back overhanging tree branches and foliage growing close to the edge of the roof with trimmers.

    • 2

Hose the entire roof and especially the drains. Do not put the hose inside the drains as it will jam them up by the pull of its suction pressure.

    • 3

Remove crinkled caulking and warps. Repair broken sections of the drains. Secure loose parts and reapply cement to loose shingles. Patch damaged shingles with pieces of metal flashing.

    • 4

Check the vents under the roof and install additional vents as needed.
