How to Hide Black Roofing Nails

Roofs on houses are exposed to extreme elements over time. Between hot sun and cold winter nights, the materials from which the roof is made expand and contract. Even on the most well-constructed roofs, there's a chance that some of the roofing nails will pop up through the singles as a result of age or elements. If some of your black roofing nails are popping up, creating unsightly bumps and bulges, performing a repair job can hide them and secure them back into proper spots.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a piece of felt roofing paper to an approximate size of 4-by-2 inches.

    • 2

Fold the felt roofing paper in half once, and then again, to form a square.

    • 3

Lift up the roof shingle from which the black roofing nail is protruding. Use a scraper to gently pry it back if necessary.

    • 4

Remove the black roofing nail and relocate it approximately 1 inch from its previous location to find solid wood.

    • 5

Apply approximately ½ tsp. of asphalt cement on the back of the shingle where the nail once protruded. Press the felt roofing paper square into place over the hole.

    • 6

Lay the shingle back down into place on the roof to cover the newly located black roofing nail. If the shingle doesn't originally lie flat on its own, apply a dab of asphalt cement to the underside of the lower corner of the shingle and press down.

    • 7

Locate the spot of the patched nail hole and fill with a small amount of asphalt cement. Sprinkle loose shingle granules over the hole until covered to complete the repair and hiding procedure.
