Cut a piece of felt roofing paper to an approximate size of 4-by-2 inches.
Fold the felt roofing paper in half once, and then again, to form a square.
Lift up the roof shingle from which the black roofing nail is protruding. Use a scraper to gently pry it back if necessary.
Remove the black roofing nail and relocate it approximately 1 inch from its previous location to find solid wood.
Apply approximately ½ tsp. of asphalt cement on the back of the shingle where the nail once protruded. Press the felt roofing paper square into place over the hole.
Lay the shingle back down into place on the roof to cover the newly located black roofing nail. If the shingle doesn't originally lie flat on its own, apply a dab of asphalt cement to the underside of the lower corner of the shingle and press down.
Locate the spot of the patched nail hole and fill with a small amount of asphalt cement. Sprinkle loose shingle granules over the hole until covered to complete the repair and hiding procedure.
