How to Install Hip & Ridge Asphalt Caps

Asphalt shingles are your home's first line of defense against water penetration. This system moves water down the surface and into gutter and downspouts. Any failure in this covering introduces water into the building envelop that can damage the structure, insulation, interior finishes and personal belongings. Installing asphalt shingles correctly is the best way to mitigate these problems. The final step in installing shingles is securing the hip and ridge asphalt caps.

Instructions

    • 1

Align the first ridge shingle so it is flush with the edge of the roof and centered perfectly in the middle of both slopes.

    • 2

Hammer two nails through the end of the shingle and into the roof sheathing.

    • 3

Apply roofer's adhesive on the first shingle in the location where the next one will overlap. This step is not required, but it adds strength to the ridge cap, protecting it from wind damage.

    • 4

Lay the next ridge shingle overlapping the first shingle to the marked location. Install using the same method as the first ridge shingle. Repeat this process until you reach the end of the ridge line.

    • 5

Install your last ridge shingle in the opposite direction from the rest. Align its leading edge with the edge of the roof line and fasten it with two nails.

    • 6

Apply roofer's caulking to the heads of the two exposed nails on the last ridge shingle. This prevents moisture penetration through these two fasteners.
