How to Install Rain Gutters on a 50-Foot Section

Rain gutter installation can be a one-person do-it-yourself home improvement job. However, this might not be the case if you have a very large house and large sections of rain gutters to install that cannot be broken down into smaller pieces, such as a 50-foot section. With rain gutter sections that are this large, you will likely need at least one other person to help you hold the system in place while you install it.

Things You'll Need

  • Chalk
  • Tape measure
  • Drill
  • 1/8-inch drill bit
  • Brackets
  • 1/4-inch lag screws
  • 1-inch machine screws
  • Flanged nuts

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the locations for where you will install the 50-foot section by making a chalk line. This line should extend the entire distance along the fascia and run 1.25 inches below the metal flashing on your roof.

    • 2

Find the nail heads that connect the rafter tails behind the fascia of your home. These heads show you the location of the rafter tails. Mark every other one with chalk.

    • 3

Drill into the rafter holes you marked using a 1/8-inch bit. This is the pilot hole for the rain gutter brackets.

    • 4

Attach the brackets where you drilled the pilot holes using 1/4-inch lag screws.

    • 5

Ask a friend or two to help you lift the 50-foot rain gutter system up onto the brackets. The gutter's system will slide into hooks on the brackets. Attach the system to the brackets and the fascia by installing 1-inch machine screws, along with flanged nuts, through the bracket screw mounting holes.
