How to Ground an Aluminum Enclosure

Electrifying a fence or metal enclosure with a harmless low voltage charge is a highly effective means of keeping animals, such as pets, livestock and predators, in or out. Sometimes used as a lighter and less expensive alternative, aluminum's molecular structure does not have the same conductive properties as other types of metal. In order to stay adequately energized, aluminum must be grounded more thoroughly than galvanized metal or steel.

Instructions

    • 1

Hammer three, 6-foot sections of 1/2-inch galvanized pipe into the ground, spacing the pipes 3 feet apart. Leave 4 inches of pipe exposed above ground.

    • 2

Attach a grounding clamp to a solid spot on the aluminum enclosure, such as a metal post or bracket, with a screwdriver. Connect one wire clamp to the top of each grounding rod with the screwdriver.

    • 3

Connect the grounding wire to the wire clamp on the enclosure with the screwdriver. Run the grounding wire through all three of the wire clamps on the top of each of the three grounding rods. Tighten the wire to the wire clamps on the grounding rods with the screwdriver.
