How to Install Nylon Rain Gutter Mesh

Many homeowners dread the task of cleaning all the leaves and debris out of their gutters every fall. However, you can prevent the leaves and debris from entering your gutters in the first place by installing nylon or vinyl gutter mesh. This mesh allows rain water to freely enter your gutters while blocking anything larger. Once the leaves dry out, they simply blow off your roof without any effort on your part.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean out any leaves, sticks or other debris from your gutter. Once you have removed the large debris, run a garden hose up to the gutter and rinse out all the dirt and smaller debris.

    • 2

Set up a ladder under one of the gutter's ends. Lift up the shingles to separate them from the roofing felt. If they stick, gently slide a utility knife between the two layers.

    • 3

Slide the mesh rain gutter guard's flat end under the shingles. Push the guard up until the curved end rests on the gutter's outer lip.

    • 4

Push the guard down until it snaps into place on the gutter. Drive sheet metal screws through the guard and into the gutter's lip to hold the guard in place. Use three screws per guard; one in the center and one on each end, approximately 2 inches in.

Install the second mesh guard next to the first guard. Butt the two guards' edges tight together so debris does not slip between them. Secure the second mesh guard to the gutter with sheet metal screws. Work your way down the gutter until you cover the entire length.

Cut the final mesh guard piece with a tin snips, if a full guard section does not fit. When you reach an outside corner, place a protractor on the mesh guard and mark a 45-degree angle with a marker. Cut along the mark with a tin snips. Overlap sections of mesh guard to turn an inside corner.
