How to Repair a Wood Truss

Wood roof trusses that become cracked, split or otherwise damaged will lead to roof sagging and/or cracks under warped shingles or dislodged tiles. In turn, rainwater will leak from the roof, under the shingles or tiles and down into the attic. The water will then begin to soak the insulation and eventually pool in the ceiling, causing an interior leak. To repair a damaged roof truss, you'll need just a few items.

Things You'll Need

  • Wood gusset plates

Instructions

    • 1

Identify the wood truss that is cracked or split. Look for splintering and cracks in the wood grain along each truss.

    • 2

Hold a wood gusset plate against one side of the wood truss where it is cracked or split and fasten it to the truss with a hammer and stainless steel nails.

    • 3

Go to the other side of the wood truss and fasten another gusset plate to the other side, securing it in place with stainless steel nails and a hammer.

    • 4

Fasten a wood gusset plate to the underside of the wood truss as well, using a hammer and stainless steel nails. Your wood truss is now fully reinforced.
