Instructions

    • 1

Count the number of layers of shingle already on the roof, since local officials dictate the number of layers permitted on a roof. You should count the number of shingles on the rake (the sloped edge) of the roof and check local roofing codes. It is possible to place new shingles over old shingles, but only in some cases. Asphalt shingles may be replaced on top of asphalt, roll roofing and wood shingles, but not slate or wood shake shingles.

    • 2

Choose your replacement singles based on your home's unique needs. Many homeowners use composition asphalt shingles since they last between 20 and 40 years. Determine how many shingles you need to buy by measuring the roof. Roofing shingles are sold in squares, which cover 100-square feet of roof.

    • 3

Remove old, damaged shingles using a flat shovel and use a crowbar or claw hammer to loosen nails. Loosen flashing around vents and soil sacks with a crowbar, sweeping debris into a dumpster as you work.

    • 4

Remove flashing carefully; it can often be used as a template as you reroof your home.

    • 5

Inspect and replace any rotted wood trim or sheeting before applying new shingles. Inspect wood for rot by poking it with a screwdriver, replacing boards as you go.

    • 6

Begin reroofing your home with new shingles at the bottom edge of the roof, working your way up in a pattern that leaves no space for water to leak through shingles. Fasten shingles in place with nail indication marks on the shingle itself.
