Locate all the roof shingles that have been damaged by the hole with a flat pry bar.
Use a bent pry bar to loosen the nails holding the damaged shingles in place. Pull them out with a flat pry bar.
Slide the shingles out. Then, remove any remaining nails using the same method as in Step 2.
Insert a board under the roof and below the hole if the hole has gone straight through your roof. This board needs to be about three times the width of the hole's diameter.
Drill through the roof into the board on both sides to hold it in place with deck screws, keeping about equal lengths of the board on all sides of the hole. The help of a second person will be beneficial to complete this task.
Put a piece of wood cut to fit the diameter of the hole in place over the board. Screw the cutout to the board beneath it.
Add a piece of roofing felt to the space where you will install new shingles. Push it up underneath the row of shingles above it.
Lift each shingle above with the flat pry bar to make room for a new one. Place a few dabs of roofing tar onto the backside of the new shingle and slide it up into place. With the upper shingle still lifted, attach the new shingle with roofing nails. Dab on some roofing tar before removing the pry bar. Press the upper shingle in place over the new one.
Continue installing shingles until you have covered the entire area that had been damaged by the hole.
