Measure accurately the length of each side of the building where the gutters will be installed, with the help of a friend. Purchase a gutter kit from a home-improvement store. The gutter kit includes everything you need to install gutters on your building: downspouts, brackets, drop outlets and screws. Carefully read the manufacturer's installation instructions. You will use the measurements you took to determine where downspouts, brackets and drop outlets will be placed.
The gutter should be located below the roof shingles to catch the water rushing down the roof during a storm. To determine the location, hold a straightedge flat against the shingles so it extends about two to three inches beyond the roof edge. Place a drop outlet from the gutter installation kit against the buidling and move it up until it meets the straightedge. Use chalk to mark the spot on the board. Repeat at the other end of the roof. Extend a chalkline between the marks, making sure it is level.
Determine the length of gutter you will need based on your earlier measurements. Calculate how far the drop outlet should be lowered. Remember that gutters are pitched 1/16 inch for every foot of length they drain. Place the gutter components in their correct locations.
Drill and secure the corners of the gutters, using the screws found in the gutter kit. Wear safety goggles while drilling and make sure your ladder is secure. Install the drop outlets, which should be about 30 to 40 feet apart. Install brackets around the roof, about 30 to 36 inches apart. Place gutter sections on the building and attach them to the brackets by snapping them in. Place endcaps on the outlets and fasten downspouts to the siding as directed in manufacturer's instructions.
