Rent a dumpster to dispose of the vinyl shingles as you scrape them off the roof. Have the dumpster placed near the house in the front or backyard.
Put a ladder against the house in a location where the roof is accessible and away from tree branches and power lines.
Get a bucket and put safety glasses, work gloves, a shingle fork, a floor scraper, a broom, a pry bar and a claw hammer inside the bucket. This will make taking your work tools onto the roof easier.
Climb the ladder with the bucket of tools, and put on your safety glasses and work gloves. Take the shingle fork out of the bucket and go to the top of the roof at one end of the house. Begin to scrape up the vinyl shingles, going from the top of the roof to the edges. Discard the freed shingles in the dumpster.
Continue to scrape up the vinyl shingles with the shingle fork, starting at the top on one side of the roof and working toward the edge, then going to the next section beside the one you just removed. Scrape up all the vinyl shingles until none are left on the house.
Take up the underlayment with a floor scraper, following the same method of going from the top of the roof to the edge. Toss the scraped-off underlayment in the dumpster. Once the underlayment has been scraped away from the roof, sweep it off with a broom.
Remove the flashing and trim along the eaves, using a pry bar and claw hammer. Throw the old flashing and trim in the dumpster, if you are not reusing it. You can now install your new roofing.
