How to Install a Cement Tile Roof Underlay

Cement roof tile can be a durable choice for your home. A cement roof can be less prone to weather damage than other roofing options and comes molded into various shapes to give your home the look you want. If you choose to install your own cement tile roof, you'll also need to install the roof underlay, or underlayment. This layer beneath the tile and on top of the roof board allows movement between the roofing materials.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose an underlay material to go beneath your cement tile such as 30-lb. felt underlayment or 1/2-inch thick rigid foam. Visit a home improvement center to learn about the options in your area.

    • 2

Use a utility knife to cut the underlayment to fit overtop your roof. Include an overlap of a few inches between each sheet.

    • 3

Start installing the underlayment from the bottom of the roof and work your way up. By overlapping the top piece over the bottom, water will not be able to enter the roof.

    • 4

Anchor the underlayment to the roof board. The method you use will depend on the underlayment. Use screws for thicker underlay like rigid board, and use staples for thinner underlay like felt.

    • 5

Install an anchor every 6 to 8 inches to ensure your roof underlayment doesn't move. Now, you're ready to install the cement tile.
