How To: Self-Sealing Roofing Screws

After screws are installed into a roof, water can seep through the screw holes. Self-sealing roof screws prevent this from happening. The washer on the screw helps to prevent water from seeping through the screw hole; ordinary roof screws don't have this type of barrier. Using self-sealing screws on your roof will also speed up installation. Sealant doesn't have to be applied to the roof to prevent water from leaking through screw holes when self-sealing roof screws are installed.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the roof shingle or panel flat against the roof's framing members.

    • 2

Select a nut driver that fits snugly around the self-sealing roof screw's head. Insert the nut driver into the driver socket on the hand power drill.

    • 3

Set the self-sealing screw in one corner of the roof tile or panel.

    • 4

Slip the head of the self-sealing screw into the nut driver, press the drill's trigger and use pressure to screw the self-sealing screw into place. The screw's washer should be firm against the tile or panel. Don't force the screw so far into the panel that it creates a depression.

    • 5

Repeat the process to screw additional self-sealing screws into the tile or panel every 8 to 12 inches.
